Before implementing the COMFORT curriculum, an educational model that helps oncology nurses navigate discussions regarding palliative care developed at City of Hope, he conducted a pre-assesment of the nursing assistants and nurses to see where they stand when it comes to end-of-life discussions with their patients. He found that many of them, especially those who were younger or less experienced, felt uncomfortable with having these type of talks with their patients.
